  • Just 10 percent of plastics are actually recycled, while hundreds of thousands of tons of recyclable waste are exported, often to developing countries.

    Processing our tossed plastics at the sorting plant isn’t a sure bet. Random stuff that shows up in their collections, have to be weeded out at a cost before they go to a recycling center.

    Recycling centers don’t want things that don’t recycle or that can’t be recycled. If no recycling plant wants the plastic material from the sorter, it goes into a landfill.

    Different kinds of plastic can’t be melted down together, so they have to be painstakingly, and expensively, sorted by color and composition.

    And plastics, if recycled at all, are usually “downcycled” into something else, like garden furniture or plastic fiber for insulation. But after that, it’s no longer recyclable. Recycling plastics again and again isn’t usually possible.

    In theory, every item you recycle can keep resources in the ground, avoid greenhouse gases and help keep the environment healthy. That’s all good, but even better, try to avoid bringing plastics into your home as much as possible. Reuse, reduce, recycle, repurpose and resist.
